Talking to Your Adult Children About a Reverse Mortgage

For many homeowners, the hardest part of a reverse mortgage isn’t the paperwork or the numbers. It’s the conversation with the kids. Will they think I’m being reckless? Will they worry I’m being taken advantage of? Will they feel I’m spending their inheritance? These are real concerns and the good news is that the conversation almost always goes better than people fear. Here’s how to approach it.

Why have the conversation at all?

You don’t need anyone’s permission. But there are good reasons to bring your family in early rather than surprise them:

  • It removes their anxiety. Adult children often worry about reverse mortgages precisely because they don’t understand them. Information replaces fear.
  • It protects you. Including family is one of the best safeguards against the exact thing they’re worried about: pressure or a bad decision. A reputable advisor welcomes your family at the table.
  • It turns gatekeepers into allies. Once children understand the plan and see the protections, they frequently become its strongest supporters and sometimes realize it solves a problem they were worried about, like how you’d fund care or avoid moving.

Start with the “why,” not the “what”

Instead of starting with “I’m getting a reverse mortgage.” Open the conversation with the goal it serves. For example:

“I want to stay in this home for as long as I can, and I’d like more financial flexibility to do that comfortably without selling my investments or asking any of you for help. I’ve been looking at a way to do that, and I want to walk you through it.”

Leading with your intentions: independence, staying in your home, and not being a burden reframes the whole discussion. Most children’s deepest wish is exactly that: that their parents are secure, comfortable, and not struggling financially.

Address the inheritance question head-on

This is the elephant in the room, so name it. Be honest: yes, a reverse mortgage reduces the equity that eventually passes to them, because interest accrues over time. But pair that honesty with the facts that reassure:

  • They will never inherit a debt, the loan is repaid from the sale proceeds of the home, and their own finances are never on the hook.
  • The No Negative Equity Guarantee means the estate can never owe more than the home’s value at sale.
  • Most homeowners still leave substantial equity, because lending percentages are conservative and well-located homes tend to appreciate.

And the honest reframe many families arrive at: an inheritance is what’s left after you’ve lived the life you worked for not a number you’re obligated to preserve by going without.

Bring in a professional who’ll talk to everyone

The single best move is to invite your children to a meeting with your advisor. A good reverse mortgage professional will explain the solution to the whole family, answer the children’s tough questions directly, show the projected numbers, and apply zero pressure. That transparency does more to build family confidence than any reassurance you could offer alone.

It also lets your children do their due diligence which they should. Encourage them to ask hard questions.

What if they still disagree?

Sometimes a child will object regardless. Remember two things. First, their objection often comes from love and worry, not real disagreement with the plan, keep listening for the underlying concern. Second, it remains your home and your decision. The goal of the conversation isn’t to get permission; it’s to make sure the people you love understand and aren’t blindsided, and that you’ve stress-tested the decision against their honest questions.

We make the family conversation part of the process

We encourage every client to involve their adult children and any other advisors, and we’re happy to sit down with all of them. We’ll explain everything in plain language, show the estate projections, and answer every question, yours and theirs. Big decisions deserve a full conversation.
